Liverpool, England (AP) — Alexis Mac Allister’s sensational goal propelled Liverpool to a 3-1 victory over Sheffield United, reclaiming their position at the top of the Premier League on Thursday.
Jurgen Klopp’s team secured a first-half lead at Anfield through Darwin Nunez, but Sheffield United found their way back into the match with Conor Bradley’s own goal after halftime.
As Liverpool faced the threat of dropping points in the title race, Mac Allister alleviated the pressure by unleashing a long-range strike into the top corner in the 76th minute.
The match was sealed when substitute Cody Gakpo headed in a third goal in the 90th minute.
Liverpool now sit two points ahead of Arsenal at the league’s summit, though they had to work hard against bottom-placed Sheffield United.
The Merseyside club took the lead in the 17th minute with a stroke of luck, as Sheffield goalkeeper Ivo Grbic’s clearance attempt was blocked by Nunez’s jump. The ball deflected off Nunez and into the net despite his back being turned to the play.
After halftime, Sheffield United found an unexpected lifeline when Bradley inadvertently redirected Gustavo Hamer’s header into his own net in the 58th minute.
However, Mac Allister’s stunning strike swung the momentum back in Liverpool’s favor, and he came close to adding another goal when he hit the crossbar with a late free kick before Gakpo’s header sealed the victory.
