New Hearing Scheduled for Vybz Kartel’s Retrial in June

0

The retrial hearing for Dancehall luminary Vybz Kartel has been slated for June, as reported by DancehallMag. The Jamaica Court of Appeal has fixed the date for June 10th. This pivotal legal proceeding will determine whether the incarcerated artist will be freed or subjected to a retrial concerning the 2014 murder case involving Clive “Lizard” Williams.

Not only Kartel but also his three co-accused—Shawn Campbell, known as Dancehall artist Shawn Storm, Kahira Jones, and André St John—await the verdict of this hearing. Justice Marva McDonald Bishop has stipulated deadlines for the submission of legal arguments, with May 6th set for the four men and May 31st for the prosecution. The hearing is anticipated to span five days.

Earlier in March, the highest UK court overturned the murder convictions of Kartel, Campbell, Jones, and St John. The Judicial Committee of the Privy Council, in a unanimous decision, cited juror misconduct as grounds for quashing the convictions. This revelation stemmed from an allegation during the trial that a juror had purportedly attempted to sway others by offering a monetary incentive. Despite this revelation, the trial proceeded without the jury being discharged.

The Privy Council also highlighted potential coercion on the jury due to the late conclusion of the judge’s summing up on March 13, 2014. This decision to annul the convictions signifies a significant legal development, as all five judges concurred on overturning the men’s murder convictions.

Despite being incarcerated for almost a decade, Vybz Kartel continues to wield considerable influence in Jamaica’s music scene, earning him the moniker ‘King of the Dancehall.’ His impact transcends music, extending to successful ventures in footwear, contraceptives, and alcoholic beverages. Kartel’s popularity also led to him becoming the first dancehall artist to headline his own reality TV show.

The trial, spanning 65 days, remains the lengthiest in Jamaica’s legal history, capturing widespread attention both domestically and internationally.

Sharma’s century is in vain as Chennai triumphs over Mumbai in the IPL

0

Rohit Sharma’s remarkable eighth Twenty20 century couldn’t secure victory for Mumbai Indians as they fell to Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League clash. Despite Sharma’s unbeaten 105 off 63 balls, Mumbai couldn’t chase down Chennai’s target of 207, eventually losing by 20 runs.

MS Dhoni’s crucial unbeaten 20 off the last four balls for Chennai proved to be the decisive factor. In another match, Phil Salt’s blistering 89 not out guided Kolkata Knight Riders to an eight-wicket win over Lucknow Super Giants. With these wins, both Chennai and Kolkata now stand equal on eight points in the league table.

Instagram blurs nudity in messages to combat sexual extortion

0

Instagram is rolling out new tools to protect young users and combat sexual extortion, including a feature that automatically blurs nudity in direct messages. This move is part of the platform’s broader campaign to tackle sexual scams and “image abuse” while making it harder for criminals to target teens.

Scammers often use direct messages to solicit explicit images, so Instagram’s new feature aims to discourage this behavior by blurring nude images and prompting users to reconsider before sending sensitive content. The feature will be enabled by default for users under 18, with adult users receiving a notification to activate it.

Additionally, Instagram is developing technology to identify accounts potentially involved in sexual extortion and implementing measures to prevent criminals from contacting young people. This effort comes amid growing concerns about sextortion cases targeting children, with the FBI reporting a significant increase in such incidents.

Los Angeles neighborhoods were shaken by a distressing event when Danielle Johnson, also known as Danielle Ayoka in online astrology circles, went on a deadly rampage driven by her apocalyptic fears.

With over 106,000 followers, Johnson had been vocal about her anxieties regarding the end of the world, especially concerning an upcoming eclipse she believed would trigger catastrophic change. Her ominous messages escalated on social media just days before the tragic incidents, culminating in a tweet urging her audience to acknowledge the power of choice in the face of looming spiritual warfare. Johnson committed the atrocious act of murdering her boyfriend in their Woodland Hills apartment, then attempted to kill her daughters while driving at perilous speeds, resulting in the death of her infant child. The investigation uncovered a chaotic and disturbed state of mind, with bloody footprints, tarot cards, and black feathers scattered throughout the apartment.
