A recent earthquake in New York has left residents in shock

The United States Geological Survey has verified that a 4.7 magnitude earthquake occurred about five kilometers northeast of Lebanon, New Jersey.

The earthquake hit around 10:20 am ET today (April 5), causing tremors felt in both New Jersey and New York State. New York Metro Weather also swiftly confirmed the earthquake, stating on X, “YES THAT WAS AN EARTHQUAKE. Waiting for further information.” They later reassured that there was no risk of a tsunami stemming from the earthquake.

While more details on the earthquake are emerging, the New York Fire Department stated there were no initial reports of damage. New York Governor Kathy Hochul informed the public through X that her team is assessing any impacts and potential damage, promising updates throughout the day.

In light of the earthquake, New York Metro Weather admitted it hadn’t anticipated the event in their earlier weather update. “Another gradual improvement (look at us go),” they wrote earlier, followed by, “I forgot to include scattered earthquakes in today’s weather rating. My bad,” after the earthquake occurred.

Mayor Eric Adams’ office reiterated on X that there are no “reports of major impacts at this time” but advised residents in affected areas to take precautions in case of an aftershock, including dropping to the floor, covering their head and neck, and seeking shelter under sturdy furniture or against an interior wall or doorway.
