St. Vincent and the Grenadines has heightened penalties for certain sexual offenses

The Parliament of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, with cross-party support, has implemented stricter penalties for specific sexual offenses, notably enhancing the punishment for sexual activity with girls under 15. Previously carrying a maximum sentence of five years, this offense now warrants up to 15 years’ imprisonment. Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves, also the Minister of Legal Affairs, emphasized the significance of this change, stressing that girls under 15 cannot legally consent to intercourse.

He highlighted that engaging in sexual activity with girls under 13 carries a life imprisonment penalty. Gonsalves addressed the challenge of addressing concealed offenses within communities, stressing the importance of ongoing education and collaboration among stakeholders.

Amendments also include heightened penalties for indecent assault, indecency with a child, permitting premises for intercourse with minors, and offenses related to prostitution and incest, with maximum sentences ranging from seven to 20 years. These changes come amidst discussions during Child Awareness Month, reinforcing the gravity of protecting minors from sexual exploitation.
