Svg successfully eradicates HIV and syphilis transmission from mother to child

St. Vincent and the Grenadines receives commendation from the World Health Organization (WHO) for achieving certification in the elimination of mother-to-child transmission (EMTCT) of HIV and syphilis. The Ministry of Health, Wellness, and the Environment heralds this accomplishment as evidence of the feasibility of eradicating pediatric HIV and congenital syphilis through the prevention of mother-to-child transmission. St. Vincent and the Grenadines joins the ranks of 20 countries globally, with 11 from the Caribbean region, showcasing its commitment to health initiatives. Additionally, it becomes the sixth nation within the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States to achieve this milestone, with plans for re-validation in the coming years.

Dr. Richard Amenyah of UNAIDS Jamaica acknowledges the resilience and dedication of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, alongside other Caribbean nations, in establishing robust health systems. This achievement underscores the integration of HIV and syphilis interventions into maternal, neonatal, and child health services, facilitated by strong national leadership. Sr. Arlitha John-Douglas, representing the National Family Planning Program, will accept the special award certifying EMTCT on behalf of the Ministry of Health, Wellness, and the Environment in Kingston, Jamaica.

The Ministry of Health reaffirms its commitment to combating AIDS as a public health threat by 2030, emphasizing ongoing efforts to sustain progress and ensure the well-being of future generations.
